The Christmas season may be over, but there’s always time to shop! Where you shop does matter, especially if you think you might be returning a particularly peculiar item. After all, how would you know it didn’t work with your best shoes or wouldn’t taste quite right? The good news is that these stores have outstanding return policies that make the whole process easy.

1. American Eagle

The large chain retailer amazingly allows free returns at any time as long as you can provide proof of purchase. Items aren’t even required to still have the tags on them. The only exception to the rule are intimate items or swimsuits with the liner removed. It’s even possible to return items without a receipt for store credit.

2. IKEA

IKEA is a huge store with a lot to pick from, and sometimes you want to try a few things out at home before you beside. With IKEA’s No-Nonsense – 365 Days to Change Your Mind policy, you can do just that. As long as you have a receipt, you can return any item within a year of purchase for a full refund. The store will try to locate your purchase in their system in the event you don’t have a receipt, and will still offer a credit equal to the lowest price of the item over the last year if all else fails.

3. The Home Depot

With few exceptions (rugs and some furniture), Home Depot allows full refunds on any item in the store for 90 days after purchase with a receipt. What makes Home Depot especially unique is that you can get a full return or exchange on any plant that dies within a year of purchase – no questions asked. Try not to test that one out though!

4. REI

Outdoor enthusiasts rejoice! REI allows exchanges for just about anything in the store for up to a year after purchase. The only exceptions are outdoor electronics that must be returned within 90 days of purchase. Just make sure you keep your receipt – you’re probably out of luck without one but REI will help you work with the manufacturer’s warranty.

5. Zappos

Since Zappos is an online shoe giant, they want to make it as easy as possible to buy and return items. If an item doesn’t fit right if you’re just not happy with it, Zappos allows returns on any item up to a year after purchase. They’ll send you a shipping label on their dime; all you have to do is get the item to the UPS store. Returns must be in original condition though; any wear and tear on items will void this service.

6. Kohl’s

Kohl’s really knows how to make returns easy. They’ll take back just about any item at any time, even if you don’t have a receipt. You read that right – even if you don’t have a receipt. A Kohl’s associate can look up your purchase from a Kohl’s card or charge card and reimburse you accordingly. If you’re returning certain premium electronics though, a receipt is required and you’re only allowed 30 days for a return.

7. Nordstrom

Nordstrom really sets the bar when it comes to returns. There is no limit to their policy – no limit on what you can return or when you can return it. As long as you have a receipt, you’ll be issued a full refund for the purchase. Returns without a receipt will be given by way of a Nordstrom gift card. Even online purchases can be sent back for free or returned in store. Special occasion dresses are an exception – those must be returned with the tags still attached and in original packaging.

8. L. L. Bean

Here’s another store that used to have a lifetime guarantee on products, but unfortunately this ended back in 2018 after the policy was abused. Don’t fret though; L.L. Bean still has a very generous one year return policy, even if the item is worn. They will not accept returns without a receipt or packing slip though.

9. Land’s End

Macy’s has more exceptions than most, but almost all products can be returned within 90 days for a refund. It’s even possible to return new or gently used fragrances or cosmetics. 11. Costco

Costco is another big company with a big return policy. Their satisfaction guaranteed policy allows for returns on any product they sell within 90 days of purchase. They’ll even exchange most non-perishable items well beyond 90 days with a similar item or a refund. Even better is that all purchases are tracked in their system and linked to your membership ID so you won’t even need to keep track of your receipts.

12. Bath & Body Works

Bath & Body works has an impressive 100% satisfaction guarantee. Not only can you return new items without issue, you can even return used items at any time if you’re not satisfied to get a full refund. If you don’t have a receipt, you can still bring the item in for an exchange or get merchandise credit.

13. Land’s End

Land’s End’s return policy is simple: bring your item back within 90 days of purchase for a refund in the original form of payment. If you wait until after the 90 days to return an item or if you don’t have the receipt, you’ll still get store credit for the item.

14. Bloomingdale’s

Bloomingdale’s allows you to bring back an item within 365 days of purchase, as long as the item is still in good enough condition to sell. For whatever reason, you’ll only get a full refund for the first 90 days – after that you’ll only get store credit. There are a few exceptions, notably that certain dresses can’t be returned if the tags have been removed, mattresses can only be returned for credit towards another mattress, and clearance items must be returned within 30 days.

15. Target

For most of the items Target carries, the return policy is pretty basic – you can return unopened items to the store within 90 days for a complete refund. Where Target shines though is with the brand it owns. Target believes in its products so much that they allow up to a year to return them for any reason. Even without a receipt, Target can look up any purchase made with a card or check and still issue a refund.

16. Trader Joe’s

Trader Joe’s really wants you to try their products. So much so, in fact, that they will take back any item, in any condition, at any time. Half eaten bag of pretzels? No problem. Didn’t care for that artichoke dip? Bring it back and they’ll issue a full refund. Word on the street is that Trader Joe’s has even accepted moldy cheese left in the fridge for an unknown length of time.

17. Bed, Bath, & Beyond

Making a return with Bed, Bath, & Beyond is easy – bring back an item within 90 days of purchase and you’ll get your refund. Watch for excepted items though – electronics must be returned within 60 days, and seasonal items must be returned within 30. If the item was purchased with a gift receipt, you’ll receive credit for the amount paid. If the store isn’t able to locate your purchase and your receipt has gone missing, you’ll walk away with store credit – but for 20% less than the current selling price.

18. Patagonia

Buying from Patagonia couldn’t be easier. Returning to Patagonia couldn’t be easier either. You can bring them in at any time for a repair, replacement, or a refund. They don’t even require a receipt! All the store asks is that the item shows no obvious signs of wear. If you wait more than a year, you’ll get store credit based off the item’s last known price.

19. Athleta

Athleta is a division of the GAP organization and specializes in women’s workout clothing. What makes Athleta stand out is that you can return any item, worn or not, within 60 days for a full refund. This even includes leggings, sports bras, and swimwear.

20. Lowe’s

Not to be outdone by The Home Depot, Lowe’s offers a 90 day return policy on most of the new, unused items they carry. Items such as major appliances and liquid paint must be returned within 30 days. If you’ve misplaced your receipt, Lowe’s can usually track down your purchase via your phone number, credit card, or check number.

21. Apple

It’s exceptionally rare for an electronics store to allow any returns at all, let alone one as big as Apple. It’s not lengthy, but you can return items you’ve purchased directly from Apple for up to 14 days from the date of your original purchase. You must return the electronic with everything it came with, including the box, so be sure to hold on to it!

22. Eddie Bauer

Eddie Bauer is another clothing retailer that lets you return items for up to a year from the date of purchase. With the receipt, you’ll get your return back in the form of payment you used to grab the item in the first place. Members of their loyalty program don’t even need a receipt as long as you used your rewards account during purchase. If all else fails, returning an item without a receipt or membership will get you a store credit for 50% of the item’s value.
